Introduction

The Central Decontamination Unit (CDU) is very important to the hospital. We support the Operating Theatres, Endoscopy Theatre, Emergency Department, ICU, and Outpatient Departments. We also help the Theatres and Outpatient Departments at Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise. Even though patients may not see what we do, surgeries and medical procedures couldn’t happen without our work.

Our Work

Our main job is to carefully clean, disinfect, and sterilize reusable medical tools and endoscopes. We follow strict rules and standards set by the HSE to make sure everything is done safely and correctly.

We have a quality system in place to make sure all tools are safe for staff and patients. Our trained staff play a key role in stopping infections in the hospital, which helps keep patients safe and supports the hospital’s work.
